Proverbs are concise, didactic, and formulaic anonymous sayings that reflect the cultural heritage of a society dating back centuries. These expressions, which are uniquely utilized by each nation and are interested to various fields such as sociology, philosophy, history, and literature, possess a powerful and rich expressive capacity. Known as mesel in Arabic and Persian, and atasözleri in Turkish, these sayings have also historically been referred to as atalar sözü or occasionally atalar sözleri. This study examines several proverbs in Persian and Turkish that share equivalent meanings and attempts to identify their correspondences. Within the scope of this study, we will address the similarities and differences in both meaning and vocabulary between Turkish and Persian proverbs (with a focus on the Afghan variant of Persian). Although Turkish and Persian belong to different language families and are recognized as the languages of distinct cultures, historical interactions between the two have fostered significant linguistic and cultural affinities. The centuries-long political, commercial, and cultural relations between the Ottoman and Iranian civilizations; their shared geography; and their similarities in religion, traditions, and social structures have further reinforced this closeness. Moreover, lexical borrowing has led to substantial overlap in the vocabularies of both languages, a phenomenon that is also evident in cultural linguistic elements such as proverbs and idioms. All these factors reveal that Turkish and Persian are closely linked not only linguistically but also on a cultural level.
