An Examination of Types of Paronomasia (Jinas) in the Poetry of Haidari Wujudi

Abstract

Paronomasia, or jinas, is one of the most significant rhetorical devices in Dari Persian poetry, widely employed to enhance the beauty and aesthetic pleasure of poetic language. Haidari Wujudi, one of the prominent contemporary poets, has artistically drawn upon the capacities of paronomasia to embellish his poetic expression. The aim of this study is to identify, classify, and analyze the various types of paronomasia in Wujudi’s poetry and to demonstrate their role in enriching the artistic and aesthetic dimensions of his work. This research was conducted using a descriptive–analytical approach and a library-based methodology. The findings indicate that Wujudi has employed diverse forms of paronomasia throughout his poems, and his works are abundant in rhetorical devices, particularly jinas. These techniques play a significant role in strengthening literary expression—especially within the fields of rhetoric and aesthetics—and in creating diversity within unity in Dari Persian poetry. They are considered essential elements in the aesthetic formation of poetic discourse. Therefore, examining paronomasia in Wujudi’s poetry can provide a more precise understanding of the rhetorical and literary potentials embedded in contemporary Dari Persian poetry.
